First time I visited Gandzasar I was swept away by its beauty. This monastery is one of the most beautiful that I have visited. I remember walking around and hearing an elderly tourist talking to her husband in French, looking at me and giggling. Not speaking French, I asked my wife to translate. Bursting into laughter, my wife said that the woman assumed I was a local and seeing my large figure (at that time) thought that the locals were well fed.
Tip: Go to the northern part of the monastery wall and you’ll see the shell of a mortar bomb that hit the wall and did not explode during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. Locals believe that the monastery was guarded by angels during the war. ⛪️
